John Coghlan’s Quo Interview

John Coghlan’s Quo are playing The Flowerpot on 18 April 2015 and the Derby Gig Guide caught up with John Coghlan ahead of a string of pub and festival show over the spring and summer.

Since leaving Quo after the 1+9+8+2 album John has worked with many notable and diverse musicians in his own Diesel Band as well as Partner’s In Crime and the short-lived Rockers featuring Phil Lynott, Roy Wood and Chas Hodges. Coghlan has also collaborated with Noel Redding (ex-Jimi Hendrix) and Eric Bell (ex-Thin Lizzy).

During the late 90s John Coghlan’s Quo was formed and through various line-ups have played regular gigs all over the UK and Europe. The current group performing as The John Coghlan Band consists of John on drums with Baz Barry, Mick Hughes and Pete Knight from NWOBHM Boogie Band Predatur completing the line-up.

Coghlan stresses that this band is not a tribute act. The idea is recreate as authentically as possible the “70s Quo Sound” very much in keeping with John’s stint in Quo. The set will reflect John’s time with Quo playing classics and lesser-known songs

When asked about playing small venues Coghlan said I like playing “small gigs because it is getting back to my roots in a way.” John went on to explain that for the past 26 years he has played gigs at his local pub twice a year and looks forward to them. “We still attack the songs the same as at the big gigs and Quo fans love it because that’s the way it should be played.”

The Frantic Four reunion (classic Quo line up) featuring Rossi, Parfitt, Alan Lancaster and John Coghlan came about at an awards dinner when the band were presented with the Classic Album award for the legendary Status Quo Live 1977 release by the magazine Classic Rock. This was when the idea for doing some shows together first came about. The film director Alan G Parker was making the documentary Hello Quo and along with Quo’s manager Simon Porter got the classic line-up to meet up at Shepperton Studios for a jam for the first time in 32 years. A short Reunion tour was announced for the spring of 2013 and the tickets sold out in about fifteen minutes. The tour was so successful that a further tour was announced for the spring of 2014 for the last ever time. As yet there are no plans to do this again.

As for the John Coghlan’s Quo gig at The Flowerpot in April, we are to expect some of the absolute classics from the 70s heyday such as Rain, Down Down, Caroline and Roll Over Lay Down as well as some lesser known songs that will hopefully include April, Spring, Summer and Wednesdays, Hold You Back and Spinning Wheel Blues. It is going to be a great night.

Tickets are £13.00 and are on sale at The Flowerpot as well as www.seetickets.co.uk (there may be a small charge). For more information on John Coghlan have a look at www.johncoghlan.com.
