THE GREAT FESTIVAL DEBATE?

2 Years ago a group of people sat in a pub and discussed festivals. All had been to a mixture of the biggest festival's the UK had to offer but had found a feeling of disappointment after the summer when they not only felt many festival didn't meet the hype that surrounded them but also that it left a hole in their wallet that would normally only be acceptable after a 'memory of a life time' holiday.

Three of these people decided to see if they could do it better. This was not a crazy decision however, this group had between been running venues, events and working in the music and events industry for the best part of a decade with a recognised amount of success, with the head of the group being owner of one of the UK's most successful small music venues, The Maze in Nottingham.

With both an understanding of the roots music industry and independent business in the UK, the group came up with an idea it felt would speak to the disillusioned festival go-er, the disillusioned musician and the local community and in 2011 they held a soft launch of their first festival, Burtfest in Burton Upon Trent.

Burtfest 2011 was held over 2 days with 1 stage and 40 bands, all of which were up and coming local acts. Tickets were kept as cheap as possible (£10 a day) and by working with local and national business sponsers they assured Burtfest pulled in a crowd of over 1000 people and made profit, however this profit was given straight back in to the local community, helping local charities and helping to improve the community we worked with to make the festival happen.

2012 sees Burtfest raise it's game. Now on a larger site in Burton-On-Trent with 3 days of music over 4 stages, Burtfest works with local food and drinks retailers, local shops who hold workshops and stalls, local businesses who also again sponser or donate to the event and local bands who make up over 60% of the lineup, however Burtfest this year has some bigger names headlining including The Selecter, The Skints, O/D Saxon, InMe, Max Raptor, Petebox,The Wurzels and Paddy Constitine's band Riding the Low.
Once again all profit made from the festival will be redistributed back in to the local community, supporting local charities and community projects and tickets are once again as cheap as we could make them with weekend tickets (including camping) at £45 and day tickets at £20.

Burtfest also encourages families to attend, with it being the only festival in the UK that let's under 18s in for free (must be accompanied by a paying adult) and has many family activities to bring the whole community together for the weekend.

The idea of Burtfest is that it is a realistically affordable festival that offers an alternative to the run of the mill festivals that have taken over the UK in recent years, whilst doubling up as a community project supporting the local music scene, advertising local business and raising money for the local community. Burtfest hopes to not only offer the music loving community a quality and affordable weekend but also help the local economy and bring back the community spirit which has been lost in recent times.
